STARLIMS Professional Services

Delivering optimized LIMS solutions on-time and in-budget

Overview

iConnect Consulting brings more than 40 years of combined laboratory, systems development, and customer service experience to delivering high‑value business solutions for public‑ and private‑sector laboratories. Our work is centered on providing expertly configured STARLIMS implementations across clinical, molecular diagnostics, and public health verticals.

Our long track record of success comes from establishing immediate credibility with our clients through a multidisciplinary team of seasoned Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) with deep laboratory and IT backgrounds. By aligning system capabilities with each client’s operational needs, we design and deliver optimized STARLIMS solutions that meet or exceed expectations—while consistently bringing projects in on time and within budget.

Business Analysis

Our laboratory Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) conduct comprehensive business process analysis across all relevant laboratory sections to document the existing, or “As‑Is,” operating model. They then design a tailored “To‑Be” workflow that incorporates the key requirements identified during the requirements analysis phase.

Drawing on deep system expertise, our SMEs prioritize configuration of existing commercial‑off‑the‑shelf (COTS) functionality and limit custom development to only what is truly necessary. Throughout the process, they identify opportunities to leverage synergies and shared workflows across laboratory units, ensuring the final solution meets or exceeds expectations for functionality, budget, and project timelines.

Configuration

Our technical SMEs configure the system based on the functional and user requirements defined in the “To‑Be” analysis. With many years of successful STARLIMS implementations, they draw on deep system knowledge to identify efficient approaches—leveraging core functionality and reusing proven patterns from past projects rather than reinventing the wheel.

Laboratory SMEs work closely with the technical team throughout configuration to determine the most effective way to implement each requirement. This partnership ensures continuous testing, validation, and alignment with real‑world laboratory workflows.

Testing and Validation

  • Unit level testing – once required functionality is delivered, an iConnect business analyst tests it to make sure it matches the requirements specified in the “To-Be” document. This testing is done in a Development environment.
  • Functional testing – the lab’s functionality is tested by the lab’s power users. This testing is done in a Testing Environment.
  • Regression testing – in a multi-lab environment, existing labs must test the system to make sure their existing functionality is preserved. This testing is done in the Pre-Production environment.

iConnect uses a uniform system to document and track all testing issues. Multiple testing cycles can take place before all the fixes have been re-tested and closed.

Training

  • Assay Building
  • Report Building
  • Instrument Interfacing
  • HL7 Connectivity

Documentation

  • Test Scripts – used by laboratory end-users during both functional and regression testing.
  • Quick guides – provide a concentrated “step-by-step” description of the delivered functionality in order to assist laboratory end-users during the training phase.
  • User Manuals (optional) – a complete manual describing all the delivered functionality in detail.
  • Assay-specific workflows and configuration notes
  • Report-specific layouts and field mapping
  • Instrument interface documentation

HL7 Connectivity

  • Assistance in understanding and implementing LOINC/SNOMED/OIDs vocabularies
  • Assistance in understanding and implementing CDC PHINMS guidelines
  • Implementation of the ORDER and RESULT messages based on Laboratory Orders Interface (LOI) and HL7 Laboratory Results Interface (LRI) Implementation Guides

Support

Ongoing enhancements to a STARLIMS are essential as laboratory operations and business requirements continue to evolve. Using ITIL‑aligned service management practices, iConnect establishes a structured framework that supports regular maintenance, continuous improvement, and long‑term system stability once the implementation phase is complete.

Upgrades

Upgrading to the latest STARLIMS release can be time‑consuming and costly for internal teams. iConnect’s experienced project managers and engineers handle the full upgrade lifecycle—from running upgrade scripts to testing, data migration, and deployment—ensuring a smooth, reliable transition. Your IT staff can stay focused on other critical priorities while we manage the heavy lift.
